The Flower Market: Prettiest Spot in Cuenca Ecuador (Video)

One of our favorite places in Cuenca is the flower market. It’s beautiful! I enjoy visiting the flower market regularly because I’ve noticed that Bryan and Drew find it very hard to resist buying me roses. 🙂

Prettiest Spot in Cuenca?

Cuenca is a city full of culture and beauty with it’s beautiful parks and architecture. But if I were asked where the prettiest spot in Cuenca is I would have to say the flower market.

Selling at the flower market looks like a nice job. I’m sure there is a lot of hard work involved and some worry about selling “fresh” flowers, but this looks pretty good to me. Sitting outside surrounded by beautiful flowers, meeting people and seeing their day brightened by your flowers!

There are so many different kinds of flowers in a relativity small area, so much color and a fresh smell that picks you up.
I can’t help but feel happy walking through the flower market.

The Atmosphere at Cuenca’s Flower Market

The atmosphere is gorgeous as well.

People linger and mingle among the flower stands, smiling and smelling,  pointing and picking up the flowers, arranging them into beautiful bouquets.

There is a fountain nearby where many like to stop, splash around a bit and cool off. We see older gentlemen sitting across from the market playing cards laughing and visiting.

The flower market makes such a lovely setting people can’t resist taking photos. We’ve seen film crews there a few times as well.

You can buy flowers separately and make your own arrangement or pick from the many arrangements on display. A dozen roses cost around $2.00.

How to Find The Flower Market

The flower market is located near Parque Calderon – just a block away. You’ll find it on Mariscal Sucre in the Plazoleta del Carmen, in front of the church El Carmen de la Asunción across from the Catedral de la Inmaculada Conception.

It’s located between Parque Calderon and the San Francisco market.

Just past the San Francisco market you’ll find Casa de la Mujer, so the flower market makes a nice stop while sightseeing and shopping.

Moved to Cuenca four months ago. Am negotiating with the hotel kitty corner from the flower market for a long term apartment rental for all the reasons you all have stated...It's just beautiful...all year long. Can you imagine just throwing open those palladian doors to your terrace over looking that flower market? Heaven......:)

Love flowers! Looking forward to the markets when we arrive in June. My wife and I doing a one month stay to see if it's a match for us when I retire from teaching next year. Thank you for writing about it!

I love flowers and am moving down there within the next 6 weeks. But have so much to do yet. But wonder if I can get seeds to plant some flowers, because I am going to have the most fabulous back yard in Ecuador. Or should I buy seeds here????

Generally speaking, transporting seeds across borders can be problematic. We've seen seed packets and transplants - you won't have a problem making a beautiful backyard. :)

Trying to buy flowers at the market, in January, I thought the lady said it was six dollars so I took out a five $ bill and a one dollar coin. She saw this in my hands and immediately told me it was NOT six, but three dollars. She then added a few flowers more to the bouquet she had finished preparing!!! Can you imagine any seller anywhere in North America doing this? It is one reason we are applying for a residency visa!
