Taxi Rates in Cuenca, Ecuador

Cuenca Taxi Rates
Taxi rates seem to be almost an unofficial gauge for the cost of living in a city or country. Some articles will try to convince you that a taxi in the city of Cuenca is just $1. While taxis are cheap, this is just crazy. Buses for $0.25 – yes, but taxis aren’t $1. At least not in Cuenca.

Well, okay once in the last 16 months, I paid $1. It was just a couple of blocks and the driver asked for $1.50. I had a dollar coin and a $5. He didn’t have change so he accepted the dollar coin. So yes, I guess taxis can cost $1. But not really.

Here is a photo of the taxi rate chart that Dena took earlier today at Mall del Rio. Its a new price chart and gives a basic range of destinations. A trip from Mall del Rio to the Airport/Bus Terminal costs $3.00. This is on the other side of the city. To Coral Centro Cuenca Taxi Rates - Detailedthe rate shown is $1.50 – I think you would probably still pay $2 – $2.50 but it gives a range of what the drivers should be charging.

Whats your experience? Do you pay less where you live?

Whats the cheapest taxi that you’ve ever taken?

I went to Loja last week and the taxis there seemed cheap. I think the first one from the terminal to the centro area was $1.00 and the return was $1.25. That was about 3 km’s or so. As for Cuenca, we are happy to be out of Racar where the local service was trying to gouge us at times. We pay about $3 (sometimes $2.50)from our place near Coral Centro to the Centro area near the park. One driver who took me on a two way trip from Centro to home tried to charge me $8. I looked at him and said it was “too much”, and I offered him $7.00(still too much) and he happily accepted. Sometimes they’re just hoping you’ll easily part with an extra dollar.

Thanks for the taxi rates, they look cheap to me. the last taxi we took was in Montreal and he took us for about 3 or 4 miles and it cost us 15.00. that was at least 20 years ago.

You're absolutely correct about taxi prices. We've been here since February and saw the prices go up at least once.

We don't bother negotiating before we get in. We pretty much know what a cab should cost from somewhere to somewhere else. So we either give exact change, shrug at being stiffed (letting them know that we know), or my wife argues with the driver (her Spanish is better than mine).

The rates at Mall del Rio are supposed to be mandatory. You can contact someone and complain if a cabbie charges more than the listed price. We don't go out there much, and don't recall paying more than we should, so I don't know if complaining works or not.

    Jeff
