Baños Ecuador Weather: Annual Climate Chart

Baños is known as the Gateway to the Amazon, because it’s the last city before descending into the Amazon River basin. It is located almost 3000 feet lower than the nearest Andean city of Ambato (altitude of 8820 feet). As with all cities located in the Andes mountains, the weather in Baños can change dramatically and very quickly. This is largely due to its location in a valley, on the eastern slope of the Andes.

Questions about weather in Ecuador are super common. As you plan your trip (or relocation) to Ecuador, it’s pretty important to know what to expect in regards to rainfall and average temperatures. It will affect what you bring and even what you can do.

To help answer those questions, we researched the monthly/annual averages for Baños: highs, lows and precipitation. This information was not easily accessible. While there are lots of charts, most are incorrect. They either base their climate charts on Ambato (higher altitude) or Puyo (a city in the Amazon). Some charts incorrectly show average temperatures at around the freezing mark.

Charts are divided by imperial and metric measurements. I’ve also included rainfall, average temperatures (monthly/annual), days with rain, humidity, and daylight hours.

Altitude of Baños Ecuador

Baños is located at 5,971 feet (1,820 meters) above sea level. This lower altitude (when compared with Quito or Cuenca) makes it a warm-weather destination. Baños is known as a rafting, canyoning, and hot springs destination.

Super helpful article. I’ve lived in Ecuador 6 years, but just visiting Baños for the first time in a week. When I pulled them up in my weather app I panicked! 40’s during day and below freezing at night it said. 😬 Obviously it’s for another area. Thanks for the great info!

Hello Bryan, Thanks for your info. We have just returned from Ecuador. My friend has lived in Banos for 25 years now and she met us in Quito. Whilee visiting Quito, we took a trip to a cloud forest in Mindo. We went up the teleferico to visit Pinchicha. While in Banos, we sat in the thermal waters, drove up to the devil festival in Pillaro, zip lined and hiked in Rio Verde, visited a couple that built their home in the Amazon near Rio Negro, visited the hotel and restaurant, Panamachamba in Ulba. What I would like to share with travellers is just how humid it is. Your chart says 83%. I come from a dry country(Canada) and I had no idea how one could be freezing while near the ecuator. It was the standard high's and low's but we only warmed up on the afternoon the sun came out. The homes and hotels have no heating. It is colder inside than out. My advice. Bring flannel PJ's, warm socks and a heating pad(the local even sleep with a warm hat(tuque) . An electric blanket if you can fir it in there. There are very few bathtubs, mostly showers. The cotton bedding always feels damp and it is hard to warm up if you crawl into bed cold. Dress in layers during the day. Even on cooler days the sun is VERY strong. A word on the thermal baths in Banos. The one up on Via El Salado is "cleaner". It has a hot water continuously flowing in and out of the pool. The one at the end of town gets filled at 6AM and emptied at 4PM. Cleaned from 4-6PM then refilled for the eve. Can't imagine what the bacteria count is by mid afternoon. Best bet. Early in the morning or from 6-7PM. The food is very delicious. Watch the street food. They tend to cut corners by using oil over and over. There stomachs can handle it but if you get sick, it likely do to rancid oils. All of it is worth it however when you see the biodiversity. I look out and see walls of green, several kinds of hummingbirds, butterflies and assorted birds. So many varieties of beetles, bugs and spiders, not to mention the plants, flowers and fruit. Well worth the trip.

Hello, I agree with all the comments about Banos. My daughter and I were there in September last year. We spent most of our time in Quito and visited other cities such Banos, Mindo and Esmeraldas. We were in Banos for four days and three nights. It's a beautiful little city with lots of waterfalls; hot springs and the best city for having a great time. Our Hostal (BnB) was conveniently located, within walking distance to restaurants; shops; Bars and Night Clubs... the clubs were filled with "party goers" dancing to Salsa and other pop music. We went club hopping in Banos... it was amazing. Even though it was in early September, it didn't rain any of the days while we were in Banos. Tip: Best time to visit the hot springs is after 7:00 p.m. Lourdes Montreal, QC, Canada.

Baños is an awesome place. Was there in 2015 and plan on returning. The people of Ecuador are the friendliest of any country I have visited. Thanks for the information. Gerry from Canada.
