Great Ecuador Treat: Encebollado

Posted in: Cuenca Ecuador, Ecuador Food, Ecuador Travel, Traveling Kids

I love, love, love Encebollado! It is delicious!

It is basically an onion soup. Whoa, whoa, whoa! Go back! Did she say onion soup?? That’s right! Onion soup.

It is very meaty!

But wait. Its not as gross as it sounds, actually, it is too-good-to-be-true :). It has fish and yuca (a kind of potato-thing), it also comes with plantain chips and choclo (crispy corn).

Oh, one more thing… cover it in lemon!

Sounding like a pretty weird treat? Well here it is common and a favorite of my mom and me.

I got mine in the Mall Del Rio, but you can get it in almost any traditional food restaurant.

A double serving of Encebollado

I hope that you will try this too. Remember: It is much better than it sounds 🙂 !

Happy treats and travels!

I love encebollado too, i have had it with rice, bread, popcorn, and plantains but my favorite is with plantain and lot of lemon. But never like my dad… he turns it into a lemonade

Great article. Short and sweet. There is so much good food to be had in Ecuador for cheap. I’ve found a couple restaurants I could trust close to work where they charge $3 for almuerzo (lunch) including soup, main course with meat, rice, salad, drink (usually fruit juice) and a small pastry dish.

There’s also MacDonald’s for the same price as in the States.

Man, I miss Encebollado so much. My little sister moved to Ecuador not too long ago, I’ll have mom buy her some encebollado, I just know she will love it.

Food is a great thing to write about and in this case a great reminder for me of Ecuador. Encebollado is a dish which tastes very different to my North American tongue, but it is a good hearty and healthy meal. It is much easier to get healthy food in Ecuadorian restaurants than in Canada.
    Keep the great articles coming.
