Great Ecuador Treat: Salchipapas (Fries with Hotdogs, Mayo and Ketchup)

If you’re in the center of town, it’s a quick snack. If you’re at a restaurant, it’s an appetizer. May I present: salchipapas. You can get them anytime you want. You can even order them in from the pizza shop!

Salchipapas are French fries, with a few little sausages. They also have a side of mayonnaise and/or ketchup. I love to get them when we are:

  • at the mall
  • in the center
  • or just taking a midday walk.

If you come to Ecuador, I would recommend you to try this treat. Just one suggestion, try the mayonnaise – it’s delicious. Thank you for reading, until next time!

I love mayo on fries too. We enjoyed the salchipapas once in awhile. I just got to enjoy a Mexican style hotdog last night for the first time. The buns are perfectly steamed. I had mine with the common toppings, dry crumbled cheese, gaucamole, mayo and ketchup I think. About $1.20 each in Canadian dollars or 15 pesos.

I always mix the mayonnaise and ketchup together first, and then drizzle the mixture on the salchipapas, YUMMY! FYI- Back in the day, salchipapas were topped with a "curtido" onion/tomato/lime/salt salad, also AMAZING!

Bryan, The kids eat this all the time. There is one street vendor here in Bahia who makes the best Salchipapas in town and there is always at least 1/2 hour line up! We all get cranky waiting but we still wait because it tastes so good! What does it cost in Cuenca? Here in Bahia it is $1.25 and worth every penny!

I was wondering what Salchipapas were. Now what do you think the sausage is made from? :)
