Groovy Galapagos George and Other Giants

Posted in: Ecuador Travel, Galapagos Islands, Traveling Kids

Giant tortoises are very interesting. They are very super slow, right? Wrong. When they want to they can go pretty fast … for a tortoise, it’s just that they don’t move much and I know why. I got to get in an unoccupied shell and I couldn’t lift it!

They have a diverse diet … plants. But they will take a slightly juicer meal, like papaya, a kind of fruit, check mom & dads site (they are very, very, very, very messy eaters!). When they ate papaya they were kind of scary, they ate it so fast!

You wanna know something really cool? Galapagos is named after the saddle-back tortoise, Galapagos means “saddle”! Isn’t that awesome?!?

Lonesome George is famous because he is the only one of his kind left. But right now he has 2 female turtles in with him. Just look at Lonesome George, (below) if you ask me, he isn’t very lonesome. Cute gal’s George!

Did you find out how old Lonesome George is? Maybe messy eating is the key to a long and healthy life…. You’ll have to try it and post the results…. (hee hee)

    Love you, Chicky!

Awesome blog, Drew. These Giant tortoises are so neat to watch. We saw them at the Miami Zoo a couple years ago. You are right, they can move when they want to.
    Keep up the good work.
    Love you.

Cool pictures Drew. Did Papa tell you about the turtle he saw last week when he was camping at Rissers? He tried to take a picture, but it got away . . .
