Handmade Ceramics in Cuenca Ecuador: Ceramic Art By Eduardo Vega

I love the work of Eduardo Vega.  He is a famous ceramic artist who lives and works in Cuenca. His shop is right next to his house in Turi, a tourist look-off location that overlooks the whole city of Cuenca.  It’s near the top of the hill, on the right-hand side going up.

You can park (or get a taxi to drop you off) at the top by the look-off point and walk back down the hill (about 2 minutes) and it will be the first house you come to on the left.He makes a wide range of beautiful and useful pieces. A visit to his shop is kind of like visiting an art gallery and shopping for home decor at the same time.

So even if you don’t end up buying anything (which is not very likely) you’ll be happy you made the trip.  You can even watch the work taking place from a glass viewing window that overlooks the process.

These are one of the most popular Ecuador souvenirs for foreign tourists.

Vegas work is very high quality.  I have a mug/coaster and a decorative wall platter (thanks mom!) that I’m very happy with.  I purchased some ceramic “look-a-like Vega” mugs, in Cuenca’s city center, which haven’t held up as well as his.  It’s worth it to pay a bit more for the real thing.

His work is inspired by the people, animals, and landscape of Ecuador.  You’ll see pieces with beautiful hummingbirds, animals of the Galapagos, beach and Andean inspired landscapes, fish, owls, and Ecuadorians in their traditional dress.

If you are just here on a visit, something from Vega’s shop would make a wonderful souvenir, they wrap it up ready for travel.

Or if you live here, his work will add beauty and a little touch of culture to your home.  It’s also a great place to take visitors.

  3. My wife and I just returned from Ecuador. We had the opportunity to visit Eduardo Vega’s shop. We purchased a few smaller items. I want to know if there is a way I can order items to be shipped here to the USA. Is there a specific site I can access to do this and will they ship to a location in the USA?

  4. We took a cab up there today and were unable to find it. The only address we had or could find was via Turi 201. Camino a Turi. The cab drive drove up and down and we finally gave up. Is the studio actually in the town of Turi? Does anyone have a better address.

  8. Hi Dena. I like Vega’s work too. I heard recently that he is no longer selling products from the location in Turi. Do you know whether or not that is true because I was thinking of making a trip up there and maybe finding a couple of things for our home. Besides, my husband dropped my mug and broke the handle so I have an excuse for a new one.

    1. Hey Jill,
I don’t know for sure, these pictures were taken a while ago.
Does anyone know if the location in Turi is still selling? If you have been there recently, please comment on this post.
There is a place on 12 de Abril that sells his work. I’ll do a post about it soon.
Too bad about your mug Jill, but it will be fun to get a new one 🙂
      Thanks
