Guide to Mall del Rio in Cuenca Ecuador (Maps and Photos)
Reading Time: 3 minutes Today, we’re going to visit Mall del Rio in Cuenca, Ecuador.
The largest mall in the city, Mall del Rio, will have you wondering if you even left your hometown. This probably isn’t what you thought would be in Ecuador’s Andes Mountains.
A large multi-screen theater, bowling alley, huge food court, and over 220 other stores and kiosks that will satisfy whatever apparel, electronics, entertainment or food craving you may get. Other malls in the city include Millennium Plaza and Coral Centro.
Mall del Rio, Cuenca Ecuador
Located in the southern part of the city, near Turi – the famous look-off point, Mall del Rio certainly offers everything you could want.
Half a dozen bus lines travel this route, and of course the taxis know the route. just a $2.50 taxi from Parque Calderon will get you there. It’s open 10am-9pm seven days a week, just like any mall back home.
My favorite spot is La Victoria – the technology (and music) shop near the food court on the second floor. They are Ecuador’s version of Best Buy. The prices are reasonable, and they carry dSLR cameras and professional tripods, high end keyboards, designer sunglasses and everything audio/video. There is also a location in the center and near the stadium.

Sometimes you can buy used goods at the markets – but it is very limited. I’ve heard of a flea market on Avenida Solano.

There is a golf and tennis club just outside of the city and there is another one on 12 de Abril and Unidad Nacional. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding partners.

The big problem about being a Canadian vegetarian is finding restaurants that serve more than limp Caesar salads! I hope that this is not the case in Eduador or I may have to open a diner!
When you go out with friends to a restaurant in Cuenca do you generally find at least one hearty vegetarian entree on the menu? For example, a good place will likely have one or two hot meatless dishes, such as: Burittos; chili; risottos; paella; pies; falafels; quinoa dishes;warm salads; stir frys; bbq veggies; mixed bean creations; and many other things that I have probably forgotten! Of course, anything with eggs and cheese is good too.
Hey Brendan – I wish I could tell you what vegetarian options are on a normal Cuenca restaurnat menu, but I really haven’t taken notice. I am a meat lover (sorry) so I really haven’t noticed other options.
Cheese is very common here. Much of the bakery bread has cheese inside. Eggs are also common.Pizzas would be a good option – there are lots of great pizza shops with at least a dozen non-meat options.
Sorry I can’t help more – I’m out of touch as far as vegetarian options go.

A Great vegetarian restaurant is Nectar
Hi Bryan – My family gave up eating meat, poultry and fish, five years ago. We do, however, eat dairy products and eggs. As you may imagine, our diet can make eating in restaurants a bit tricky as many North American establishments provide only meat based entrees. How might this compare with the cuisine in Cuenca? Our favorite restaurants are Mexican, Indian, Italian and Thai.
Are Tofu and soy milk (or EC equivalents) available in supermarkets?
Hey Brendan – Ecuadorians love their meat, no question. We have seen tofu, but I’m not sure about soy milk. We have seen a few vegetarian restaurants in Cuenca – although I can’t remember then off-hand. The supermarkets carry nuts and grains. The nuts can be expensive.
We are moving to Manta and my dad likes to bowl.
He’s 79 years old with a 190 average. any legues he can join????

Good question. Here in Cuenca we’ve only seen one bowling alley, and I don’t know if they have leagues. About Manta, I don’t know. We are going there for the first time in a couple of months…
